Therapy or No Therapy...

...that is the question.

Is therapy taboo? Here at Island Counseling Group, we think not. Let us explain why.

When someone is physically ill, what do they typically do? Most people ride out their symptoms for few days to see if the illness will pass. But when that doesn't happen, it's generally common to see a primary care physician. At this point, the physician will use various diagnostic tools to determine the root cause of the illness, and recommend a prescription for health.

In mental health counseling, it is no different. When someone is emotionally ill... experiencing long bouts of anxiety, or hurt, or sadness, or anger... this is usually indicative of a deeper root issue that needs to be addressed by a trained professional. At this point, after listening with an objective ear and using various diagnostic tools as well, the therapist may make recommendations for a "prescription for health." This prescription may contain coping skills and therapeutic tools that the client can implement in their life for personal growth.

We no longer live in an era where mental health counseling should be stigmatized as something reserved for the "crazies" as we often hear. Instead, it should be viewed as a valuable resource and gift. Most people have many players in this game called Life to help them navigate different arenas, such as physicians, attorneys, accountants, bankers, spiritual advisors, etc. Why not add a trusted, experienced, non-judgmental, objective therapist to the mix and make life a little more manageable for smooth sailing?

Be well :)
